Physical Planning Department - City of Amsterdam

The Physical Planning Department (Dienst Ruimtelijke Ordening, or DRO) is one of the City of Amsterdam’s centralized services. Our core function is the organization and design of an attractive and spatially coherent city. The DRO gives Amsterdam the metropolis the space.

Bird's eye view of Amsterdam

The DRO provides solutions for spatial assignments on every scale, both within and beyond the municipal boundaries. We work closely with district councils, other municipal services, neighbouring municipalities and other external parties. The DRO is alert, interconnected and multifaceted.

The Amsterdam of the future that the DRO is working towards is sustainable, social and creative. It is sustainable in the sense of being environmentally friendly and durable, rather than modish. Being social means being attentive to people’s needs and focused on achieving cohesion. It is creative in the sense of being animated, dynamic and diverse. The goal is to make Amsterdam even more exciting, lively and metropolitan, thus constantly enhancing the city’s appeal.

Proceeding from these principles we formulate strategies and visions, design spatial plans and devise policy as and when commissioned by the city council and other parties.
